At least 42 people died Friday when a bus collided with a truck in southern France, a local government spokesman said.

“It was a bus carrying elderly people,” Mael Gohaud, spokesman for the Gironde Prefecture, told CNN. “Five people are injured, and three survived.”   French President Francois Hollande called the crash “a great tragedy” and pledged national solidarity with the victims’ families. Reports say this is France’s deadliest road accident since 1982. The Prime Minister, Interior Minister, Transport Minister, and Secretaries of State rushed to the scene.   The crash happened on the D17 highway in Puisseguin, near Bordeaux, Gohaud said. Witnesses described horror, heroism, and luck as details emerged. One observer told BFMTV the site looked like a war zone.   Puisseguin Mayor Xavier Sublett told French radio and TV that the bus driver survived and saved lives. The driver opened the doors before impact, allowing people to escape. Eight passengers fled the flames, BFMTV reported.   The collision occurred at 7:30 a.m. Friday. BFMTV described it as a head-on crash on a narrow road. Most victims were bus passengers. The truck driver also died.   François Decauze, chairman of the Walking Club, said most victims were members. His wife skipped the trip to care for her mother during a cataract surgery. “My wife is a miracle,” he told BFMTV.         Also Read: Turkey Helped UAE To Arrest Suspects Accused of Killing Israeli Rabbi
