7 UNIZIK Students Produce Bus with Local Materials

The Mechanical Engineering Department, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (Unizik), Awka, hit another milestone as seven graduating students built a “made-in-Nigeria” mini bus. Last year, five students from the same department created a Formula One-style car named “AutoZIK.”

The team members are Ezeigwe Chitoo Callistus, Obinani Victor Chimdike, Ezeanolue Ifeanyi Emmanuel, Okoro Chinaza, Ominigbo Fidelis Igho, Nwobodo Nnamdi Miracle, and Ogbu Thaddeus Ikenna. Dr. C.H. Achebe supervised the project.   The group, known as “AUTOZIK II,” spent over five months building the mini bus using locally sourced materials. They designed it as a shuttle for use around the campus. Okoro Chinaza, the only female in the team, earned praise for her strong contribution.   Chitoo described the project as a dream fulfilled. He said they built the bus from scratch inside the university’s mechanical engineering workshop. According to him, the goal was to improve the design and comfort of existing campus shuttles. He believes the bus can compete with foreign models and even enter commercial use.   Another member, Ifeanyi, said many doubted them at the start but now celebrate their success. He explained that they designed the bus using CAD and simulation software while considering local terrain and climate.   He said the bus offers better seating, fuel efficiency, visibility, and aesthetics. He added that they tailored it to suit Nigeria’s roads and weather.   Lecturers applauded the innovation during the project defense. The team test-drove the bus in front of the university community to prove its durability and full Nigerian build.         Also Read: President Museveni to Run for Seventh Term
