A special tribunal has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death for crimes against humanity.

The verdict, delivered on Monday, comes after months of trial proceedings held in absentia, as Hasina remained in India despite repeated court orders to return and face charges. Presiding Judge Golam Mortuza Mozumder declared that Hasina, 78, was found guilty on three counts, including incitement, ordering killings, and failing to prevent atrocities during a deadly crackdown on student-led protests that ultimately toppled her government in August 2024.
