According to Daily News, the police in the state confirmed the clash which resulted in the deaths of two people. The deceased persons were identified as one Ali, a Fulani and one Ifeanyi Ifeacho, an Igbo. The incident followed the closure of the New Artisan Market by the state government over the death of a policeman. According to an eye witness, it all began when Ali came from the New Artisan Market with a cow to slaughter in the Garki abattoir. He revealed that Ali had brought a cow to slaughter to the abattoir where Ifeanyi worked as an attendant following the closure of the New Artisan Market. After slaughtering the cow, he gave Ifeanyi N400 instead of the N500 fee for slaughtering cow in the abattoir. Ali remained adamant as Ifeanyi asked him to complete the remaining N100 payment. The misunderstanding soon escalated into a fight between the two. It was gathered that Ali quickly pulled out a dagger and stabbed Ifeanyi severally on the stomach who slumped to the ground and died on the spot. When he realized what he had done, he attempted to escape but some outraged Igbo traders grabbed him and killed him in turn before proceeding to burn down the mosque inside Garki market. The Spokesman for the Enugu State Police Command, SP Ebere Amaraizu confirmed the incident and said anti-riot policemen were sent to the market to defuse the situation. Also, security has been tightened in the area to prevent the breakdown of law and order as a full scale investigation has commenced into the case.
