Check Drug Abuse, Jega Tells Pharmacists

By Editor

Former INEC chairman, Professor Atahiru Jega, has urged the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria (PCN), the Nigeria Academy of Pharmacy (NAP), and other stakeholders to stop the sale of prescription drugs over the counter.   Speaking in Lagos after receiving NAP’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Jega warned that easy access to such drugs fuels addiction, especially among youths.   “Any youth can walk into a patent medicine store or pharmacy and buy as many bottles as they want without restriction,” he said. “This has created serious problems in many parts of the country.”   He urged pharmacists to uphold ethics and regulate the sale of drugs, stressing that the damage to young people is alarming. Jega also called for government action, saying the issue goes beyond pharmacists.   He advised Nigeria to adopt stricter policies like other countries where prescription and over-the-counter drugs are clearly regulated.   Jega lamented that many Nigerians still travel abroad for minor health issues that local hospitals could treat. He concluded by urging pharmacists and society at large to work together to solve the problem.           Also Read: Trump Lands in Scotland for Five-Day Visit
