Ecuador Extradites Notorious Drug Lord ‘Fito’ to United States

Ecuador has extradited its most infamous drug kingpin, José Adolfo Macías Villamar, known as “Fito”, to the United States to face federal charges of international drug trafficking and weapons smuggling.

Macías, the feared leader of the Los Choneros gang, was flown out of the country under heavy military escort just weeks after his recapture in June. He had escaped from a maximum-security prison in Guayaquil in January 2024, triggering a nationwide manhunt and a declaration of “internal armed conflict” by President Daniel Noboa.
