Edo Plans Teacher Posting Reforms To Stop Cheats

Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, says the state will reform how it recruits, deploys, promotes, and transfers teachers to ensure fairness and better performance.

He spoke during a meeting with the chairman and members of the State Post Primary Education Board in his office.   “The key issue in appointments is competence,” Oshiomhole said. “We will start recruitment from the top, giving priority to those who score highest. Our schools need the best teachers.”   He noted that in the past, brilliant people chose teaching, but now many prefer banking, oil, or government jobs. “We need the best brains to impart knowledge, so we will pay special incentives to science teachers,” he added.   The governor said he wants proof that teachers can make a difference, measured through student performance in exams and other assessments. He also proposed bonuses for high-performing schools and pupils.   “If a child has not learned, it may be because the teacher has not taught,” he said. “We must tie rewards to effort. If people see that effort pays, they will be motivated.”   Oshiomhole stressed that the reforms will eliminate favoritism, lobbying, and political influence.
