Ekiti Poll: Military Begins Probe of Personnel

By Editor

The military high command has launched a probe into some of its officers’ alleged partisan involvement in the 2014 governorship elections in Osun and Ekiti states.

Major-General Adeniyi Oyebade, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 1 Division of the Nigerian Army in Kaduna, chairs the five-man probe panel. He announced the start of the investigation on Monday in Kaduna.   Oyebade said, “As most of you know, the last general elections held in March 2015 drew criticism from various quarters, especially the general public, over the conduct of some Nigerian Army personnel during the governorship and presidential elections.   “These allegations focused on the governorship elections in states such as Ekiti, Osun, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom, among others.   “In response to these serious allegations, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai, after assuming command, set out his vision for a professionally responsive Nigerian Army that fulfills its constitutional duties. He established this Board of Inquiry to support that goal.   “The panel will investigate these allegations and recommend appropriate actions to prevent any future recurrence.   “The military, as a noble profession of arms, must stay apolitical in our democratic system. We firmly believe politicians should handle politics entirely.   “Let me quickly add that, despite these troubling allegations, the military has largely performed commendably as the primary defender of the nation’s democracy.   “On this note, I urge all sectors of society and the general public to appear in person—if they wish—and submit their petitions in the form of memoranda, either directly to Headquarters 1 Division Nigerian Army, Kawo, Kaduna, or via courier to the Secretary, Panel of Investigation on Elections, HQ 1 Division, Kawo, Kaduna.”
