Researchers at the University of Edinburgh, including synthetic biologist Dr. Stephen Wallace, have modified E. coli bacteria to digest polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a common plastic and produce salicylic acid, a precursor to aspirin.

“It’s a circular economy dream: turning trash into medicine,” said Dr. Wallace in a statement. The innovation could offer both an eco-friendly solution to plastic waste and a new method for pharmaceutical synthesis. Also Read: President Trump Denies Ceasefire Between Israel and Iran
