EU Gives N4b to Polio Immunisation in Nigeria

As part of efforts to secure a World Health Organisation (WHO) polio-free certification for Nigeria by 2017, the European Union Support to Immunisation Governance in Nigeria (EU-SIGN) has committed N4 billion to immunisation activities in 2015.

Officials said the funding covers three categories of programme operation guidelines.   They explained that the funding will run for four years to work with State Technical Assistance teams, the states and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) to plan how to strengthen immunisation, improve the cold chain, upgrade health facilities and build capacity.   At a Bi-annual Review Meeting of 23 states and the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja, Aminata Sidibe, the Contracting Advisor and Procurement Expert for EU-SIGN, said the scheme aims to help Nigeria end polio and other related diseases, obtain WHO certification on polio and contain other vaccine-preventable diseases.   Sidibe said, “The EU is committing 150 million euros into the programme.”   Anna McAthur, Director of CONSEIL SANTE, the organisation through which the EU funds the SIGN programme in Nigeria, said, “The EU-SIGN actually came at a very good time for Nigeria because we’ve just reached the elimination of polio, and we are working towards eradication.”   She added, “Government set up state primary health care agencies and formed an advisory body in each state. Nigeria needs to strengthen its primary health care agencies and boost its immunisation system to make polio eradication a success.”   Dr. Mustapha Zubair Mahmud, Director of the Department of Logistics and Health Commodities at the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, said, “We must do all we can to maintain a polio-free country up to 2017 so that we secure certif ication.”     .     Also Read: President Museveni to Run for Seventh Term
