Brazil’s Supreme Court has sentenced former President Jair Bolsonaro to 27 years and three months in prison for attempting a coup to stay in power after losing the 2022 election. In Brazilian history, Bolsonaro becomes the first former president to be convicted of attempting to overthrow the government.

According to the court, Bolsonaro orchestrated efforts to undermine democracy, spreading disinformation about Brazil’s voting system, and encouraging actions that led to the January 8, 2023, riots in Brasília. The riots, which saw Bolsonaro’s supporters storm government buildings, resulted in property damage and destruction of historical items.
