Hamzat seeks FAO’s help on coconut value chain

coconut THE Lagos State Government has requested the support of the Food and Agriculture Organisation to develop the coconut value chain of the state. The Deputy Governor of the state, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, spoke on Thursday while receiving in audience the representative of the organisation to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States, Mr Fred Kafeero, at his office.

He said such collaboration would help Lagos to harness its potential in the coconut value chain in particular and the agriculture sector in general. Hamzat said, “FAO as we know is the United Nations organ that deals in agriculture and nutrition generally around the World. Looking at the various agricultural sectors in Lagos, one of them being the coconut industry; we are not only looking at production alone, but processing and marketing. FAO should assist us in managing the entire value chain.”

According to Hamzat, the collaboration will also have the capacity to support and facilitate access to sources of credit, markets and technologies for the development of the coconut value chain. Kafeero, in his response, noted that coconut-related issues were important and seeing the plans that Lagos had put in place to address them was a driving force for FAO to collaborate with the state.
