House Speaker Johnson Calls Off Funding Vote

By Editor

House Speaker Mike Johnson cancels vote on six-month government funding plan, citing internal Republican divisions. Johnson tells reporters, “We are having thoughtful conversations within the Republican Conference, and I believe we will get there.”

The funding bill includes a controversial measure targeting noncitizen voting, but faces opposition from at least eight House Republicans and is dead-on-arrival in the Democratic-controlled Senate. The Biden administration threatens to veto the measure ¹.

Johnson’s decision highlights the challenges he faces navigating a narrow majority and demands from former President Donald Trump. If the GOP funding plan fails, it would embarrass House Republicans and force them to scramble for next steps before the government shutdown deadline.
