I Will Draw Blood with My New Book, Says Soyinka

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, on Saturday vowed to “draw blood” with his latest book, InterInventions.

Soyinka described the book as his “vengeance” against what he called an “unprovoked assault of public lies” targeted at him.   Speaking at the formal launch of The Wole Soyinka Foundation, he called InterInventions “the nastiest book” he has ever written.   Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, unveiled the book — InterInventions: Between Defective Memory and Public Lie, A Personal Odyssey in the Republic of Liars — at the June 12 Cultural Centre in Kuto, Abeokuta.   Soyinka said the 130-page book is “so truthful that it hurts” and recommended it for anyone who feels vengeful towards public liars, calling it a kind of “homeopathic medicine.”   > “It is the nastiest book I’ve written. It’s not a butterfly book. I want to draw blood with it. If you feel vengeful, read it — you’ll feel better.”       He also expressed concern that public lying has become a full-blown industry, fueled by social media.   Soyinka called for a “ritual of public purgation,” where both the victims and the liars are brought before a public tribunal to expose the truth.   He cited former Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, as one of those who had spread falsehoods about him.   > “It was great fun watching him lie his head off,” He said. “I would have gone insane if I hadn’t found a peaceful place to work creatively.”       Governor Oshiomhole praised Soyinka as a tireless truth-teller and said Nigeria needs fearless voices like his — people who speak truth to power, regardless of consequences.
