The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has canceled its “Africa Hometown” initiative due to widespread confusion and misinterpretation surrounding the program.

The initiative, launched during the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development, aimed to foster cultural and educational exchanges between four Japanese municipalities and four African countries, including Nigeria. The controversy began when Nigeria announced that Japan would introduce a special visa category for highly skilled Nigerians wishing to relocate to Kisarazu, one of the participating Japanese cities. This claim was swiftly denied by the Japanese government, which clarified that the initiative was never designed to grant immigration benefits.
