Jonathan Was Sabotaged, Says Clark

Elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark has dismissed claims that he betrayed former President Goodluck Jonathan by saying Jonathan lacked the will to fight corruption.

Clark, a close ally of Jonathan, said the media twisted his statements for sensational effect. He insisted he never gained anything from the former president and that Jonathan’s fight against corruption was sabotaged by those around him.   In a 3,902-word letter, Clark wrote that Jonathan wanted to fight corruption but insisted on following due process. He noted that Jonathan could have opened probes into scandals like Halliburton and Siemens but chose to rely on institutions such as the EFCC and other anti-graft agencies.   Clark accused Jonathan’s aides, especially the Attorney General, Alhaji Hassan Tukur, of blocking these institutions. He said they stopped arrests and prosecutions, leaving over 50 high-profile cases unresolved for more than eight years. Plea bargains and out-of-court settlements became routine.   He recalled writing an open petition to Chief Justice Dahiru Musdapher on November 2, 2011, over delays in prosecuting former governors turned senators. Musdapher replied the next day, but most petitions against prominent Nigerians never reached the courts.   Clark said it was ironic that the same people who sabotaged Jonathan later accused him of failing to tackle corruption. He rejected claims that his relationship with Jonathan was based on personal gain.   “I never sought or received contracts, oil blocks, allocations, or financial favors during Jonathan’s six years in office,” Clark declared.       Also Read: Tottenham Parts Ways with Ange Postecoglou
