Libya is mourning the sudden loss of its top military commander after a plane carrying Lieutenant General Mohammed al-Haddad, Chief of General Staff of the Libyan Armed Forces, crashed in Turkey on Tuesday evening. Four other senior officials traveling with him also perished in the accident.

According to Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, the Falcon 50 aircraft departed Ankara’s Esenboga Airport at 17:10 GMT but lost contact with air traffic control 42 minutes later. The wreckage was discovered in the Haymana district, about 74 kilometers south of the capital. Officials confirmed that the jet had issued an emergency landing request due to an electrical failure before communication was severed.
