Mexico Expresses Concern Over U.S. Steel Tariffs

By Reporter 5

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has voiced concerns over the recent increase in U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminium imports. The decision, announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, raises import taxes on these metals from 25% to 50%.

Speaking at a press conference, Sheinbaum emphasised the potential impact on Mexico’s steel industry. “This is a significant challenge for our economy, and we will explore ways to support affected industries,” she stated. Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard also weighed in, describing the tariffs as “unfair and unjustified” given Mexico’s trade relationship with the U.S. “Mexico imports more steel from the U.S. than it exports, and these tariffs do not reflect that reality,” Ebrard explained.
