Nigeria is observing Democracy Day today, June 12, marking 26 years of civilian rule. Across the country, leaders and citizens are reflecting on the nation’s democratic journey and the progress made over the years.

President Bola Tinubu addressed the country, highlighting key milestones and ongoing efforts to strengthen democracy. This year, celebrations are more subdued, with no military parade. Instead, a joint session of the National Assembly and a public lecture is currently being held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, focusing on Nigeria’s democratic development.

Democracy Day was officially moved to June 12 in 2018, recognizing the significance of the 1993 presidential election, which was later annulled. The election, widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s fairest, led to calls for democratic reforms, shaping the country’s transition to civilian rule in 1999.
