Officers Must Be Re-Posted Every Three Years, Says Customs Boss

Retired Col. Hameed Ali, the Comptroller-General of Customs, said the service would not tolerate favoritism. He warned officers who had spent three years in a unit to expect posting.

During a visit to the FCT command in Abuja on Tuesday, Ali stressed that customs would no longer allow permanent postings to units or departments. He said every officer must earn promotion through performance and discipline, not influence.   Ali urged officers to shun corruption, adding that any mistake by a unit could damage the service’s international image. He noted that many Nigerians see customs as the most corrupt and undisciplined agency.   “We are not here to make money or enrich ourselves,” Ali said. “Anyone caught in fraud will face the law. Don’t make me use you as an example. If your plan is corruption, you will not survive this time.”   He declared an end to godfatherism, stressing that only performance and qualification would guarantee promotion.   Ali also promised improved welfare for officers and urged them to boost revenue. He said the service was working to meet the Federal Government’s 2015 revenue target of N944 billion.   “Fighting corruption is not for customs or police alone. It is everyone’s duty. Enforcement must continue. There must be punishment for violations and rewards for compliance,” Ali said.     Also Read: Trump Authorizes $300M in Weapons for Ukraine
