Australia’s Federal Court has handed down a historic penalty to Qantas Airways, fining the airline A$90 million (US$59 million) for illegally sacking 1,800 ground staff during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Justice Michael Lee, who presided over the case, described the fine as a “real deterrence” aimed at discouraging corporations from breaching employment laws for financial gain.
