Senate Opposes N64 Billion Abuja Airport Second Runway

The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday described the N64 billion contract for a second runway at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, as outrageous.

During plenary, Senator Dino Melaye (APC, Kogi West) moved a three-point motion. He admitted the need for another runway but argued the contract cost was “too exorbitant.”   The Senate urged the Federal Government to cut the cost, follow due process, and monitor the contract award carefully. “The Federal Government should reduce this unrealistic cost and duly monitor the award process,” Melaye said.   Melaye compared the Abuja project with cheaper airport projects. He noted that Heathrow’s Terminal 5, with four 4km runways, cost less than N25 billion. Gombe Airport, with a 3.66km runway, cost N8.2 billion. Jigawa Airport cost N11 billion, Bauchi N12 billion, Enugu N13 billion, and Akwa Ibom about N18 billion.   He asked why one runway in Abuja should cost N64 billion.   When put to a vote, Senators overwhelmingly backed the motion to review the contract      Also Read: Chris Wilder to Leave Sheffield United
