SERAP Urges NBA to Probe Saraki’s Lawyers over Unprofessional Behaviour

By Editor

A Lagos-based rights group, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), has asked the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to probe Senate President Bukola Saraki’s lawyers for walking out on the Code of Conduct Tribunal on Thursday. The lawyers left after the tribunal rejected their request to halt Saraki’s asset falsification trial.

SERAP’s Executive Director, Adetokunbo Mumuni, said lawyers must defend their clients but should not undermine justice or public trust. He described the walkout as disrespectful, noting the tribunal only applied Section 305(e) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.   He stressed that lawyers have a duty to the court and must act with integrity. “They should promote the rule of law and strengthen public confidence, not weaken it,” he said.   SERAP warned that without the rule of law, society would collapse into lawlessness where the weak suffer most. It said senior lawyers, in particular, must safeguard the justice system and support the fight against corruption.   The group urged Saraki’s lawyers to follow proper legal channels if unhappy with the ruling, instead of abusing the tribunal in the media. It called on the NBA to investigate the incident and punish any misconduct.
