About 300 pupils of Federal Government Girls’ College, Efon Alaaye, Ekiti State, fell ill after an outbreak of an unknown disease.

The illness started on October 10 with symptoms of vomiting and stooling. Many initially feared it was cholera.   Ekiti State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Olurotimi Ojo, said the disease was diarrhoea. He confirmed that the government had begun investigating the cause.   Governor Ayodele Fayose directed the commissioner to send healthcare workers to the school.   Parents and guardians rushed to the school to check on their children.   The school principal, Mrs. Grace Ogunyomi, alerted the State Government on Wednesday. Since the outbreak, the school has taken sick pupils to Efon General Hospital.   Dr. Folakemi Olomojobi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, said only 20 pupils remain in the hospital. She added that environmental health officers had joined the response.   “We asked the water corporation to chlorinate all six boreholes in the school. Water may be the source. We are also checking waste disposal methods,” she explained.   She said blood samples tested negative for cholera, showing only diarrhoea and vomiting. Further tests are ongoing.   The Commissioner assured the public that the government will control the outbreak.     Also Read: Macy’s Says Employee Hid up to $154 million in Expenses Since 2021
