President Donald Trump signed an executive order today authorizing the U.S. Department of Defense to adopt the title “Department of War” as a secondary name. The rebranding, which Trump says reflects a “stronger message of readiness and resolve,” marks a symbolic shift in how his administration wants the military to be perceived both domestically and abroad. The executive order permits Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to use the title “Secretary of War” in official correspondence, ceremonies, and internal communications. Trump, who has long criticized the current name as “too defensive,” cited America’s victories in World Wars I and II under the original War Department as justification for the change.
