Unifying Nigeria And Other African Nations Is A Must by Christopher Okoli

Ever since colonial powers divided Nigeria and other African countries for conquest, neither they nor Africans themselves have made real efforts to reunite the broken groups. Both sides always put selfish interests first. The little democratic structures left behind collapsed as dictators destroyed them to tighten control over the masses.

Africans, including Nigerians, failed as followers. They watched while military and civilian dictators crushed one ethnic group after another. Many stayed silent in the face of evil, and that silence allowed corruption and oppression to grow beyond imagination. Today, Nigeria and other African nations need help to rebuild democratic institutions and earn respect in the global community. Sports can serve as a strong tool for unity because star athletes can inspire peace across borders.   Corruption in South Africa has fueled hate against other Africans. In April 2015, violence broke out in towns plagued by xenophobia. Locals accused migrants of taking jobs, then turned to killing. Critics now condemn the killers but ignore the deeper issue. If African leaders had not looted national wealth, if they had created jobs at home, fewer citizens would migrate in desperation. South Africa itself suffers the same mismanagement and corruption that cripple other nations. Ongoing investigations may soon reveal shocking details.   In Nigeria, lawmakers recently declared unemployment a national emergency and asked immigration to tighten borders. They claimed foreigners take Nigerian jobs. But the bigger question remains: what happened to national budgets that pour 75% into recurrent costs and leave less than 25% for real development? Africa must wake up.   Nigeria and other nations cannot always wait for help from abroad. They must design their own programs to unite divided tribes and ethnic groups. If Nigeria ignores sports as a unifying tool, every government effort will collapse under deep-rooted divisions caused by colonialism and dictatorship.   Nigeria has over 170 million people, yet few identify simply as Nigerians. Most tie identity to tribe. In many African countries, names alone reveal ethnic background, limiting social bonds. Sports can break these barriers. Unlike politics or religion, sports create love, teamwork, and pride. Unfortunately, leaders prefer to exploit religion and tribalism rather than build unity.   Sports will only unite Africa if governments invest money and hire qualified experts to manage programs. Unity is Africa’s only path forward, but corruption must first be crushed. Leaders must also fast-track reforms because a global recession looms.   Sports build unity. Unity builds teamwork. Teamwork builds strong nations. The United States and other developed countries turned sports like basketball, baseball, boxing, football, and hockey into trillion-dollar industries, employing hundreds of millions worldwide. Nigeria and other African states must escape the chains of colonialism and dictatorship by investing in sports as a unifying force.   In America, sports also helped ease racial divisions. Without it, racism would remain much worse. Sports success made it possible for Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream to live on when Barack Obama became the first Black U.S. president in 2009. Racism still exists, but people love winners and rally around them regardless of color.   Nigeria must create 10 million jobs in five years to protect democracy. If leaders embrace sports, they can create five million jobs quickly. Developing sports from school to professional levels will produce unifying ambassadors—superstars who inspire hope. Most Nigerians remember their national football captain better than many governors. Sports can unite the country faster than politics.   President Muhammadu Buhari must reduce corruption to manageable levels and invest in sports to set an example for Africa. Leaders must also adjust fiscal policies before U.S. interest rate hikes drain resources from the continent.   Africa can rise, but only if unity, reform, and sports development replace corruption, division, and neglect.     Also Read: Cristiano Ronaldo to Extend Contract with Al Nassr
