US Denies Visas to Former EU Commissioner, Four Others

By Marie

The United States has denied entry visas to a former European Union commissioner and four other individuals, accusing them of attempting to pressure American social media companies into censoring viewpoints.

In a statement released Tuesday, the U.S. State Department described the group as “radical activists and weaponized NGOs” who had advanced censorship crackdowns by foreign states, targeting American speakers and platforms. The measure singled out Thierry Breton, the EU’s former internal market commissioner, who was instrumental in drafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA). Breton, who left the European Commission in 2024, was labeled by Washington as the “mastermind” behind the DSA, a sweeping law that imposes strict content moderation and transparency obligations on major tech platforms operating in Europe. He frequently clashed with tech leaders, including Elon Musk, over compliance with EU rules. Also Read: Ukraine Suspends Justice Minister Amid $100M Energy Corruption Scandal
