Rivers State Elections Tribunal Judgement is Victory for Democracy – Group

The Committee for the Protection of Peoples Mandate (CPPM) hailed the Rivers State Elections Tribunal judgement ordering a rerun as a victory for democracy.

In a Sunday statement, the group described the judgement as “sound” and proof that the April 11, 2015 Rivers governorship election was riddled with fraud, lawlessness, and impunity “perpetuated by agents of evil.”   CPPM’s Executive Chairman, Nelson Ekujumi, called the ruling heartwarming and logical. He said it honored electoral martyrs, upheld democracy, and reinforced the rule of law.   He praised the tribunal members for their courage and commitment to justice despite threats, blackmail, and smear campaigns from anti-democratic forces.   The group noted that local and international observers, voters, the media, patriotic security agencies, and political parties—except the ruling party and its allies—agreed the April 11 election in Rivers was not an election but a war.   It described the violence in the 2015 Rivers and Akwa Ibom governorship polls as unmatched in Nigeria’s history. In Rivers, attackers even bombed a campaign ground with explosives while security agencies stood helpless.   CPPM demanded an urgent probe into the violence in Rivers and the role of security agencies accused of undermining national security for political and financial gains.           Also Read: Miguel Uribe Turbay Survives Assassination Attempt at Bogotá Rally
