More than 30% of Grade 6 learners in South Africa are failing Mathematics, according to the Department of Basic Education’s (DBE) latest first-term results. The figures, presented to Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Basic Education, reveal that fewer than 70% of pupils achieved the minimum benchmark of 50% in the subject falling short of national education targets. The DBE has set an ambitious goal under the National Development Plan: by 2030, 90% of learners in Grades 3, 6, and 9 should demonstrate basic competency in literacy and numeracy.
