UK Cracks Down on Visa Overstays: Foreign Students Face Deportation

By Marie

The United Kingdom has launched a sweeping crackdown on foreign students who overstay their visas, warning tens of thousands of individuals that they will face deportation if they remain in the country illegally.

The Home Office has begun sending direct text and email alerts to over 130,000 international students and their dependents, stating unequivocally: “If you have no legal right to remain in the UK, you must leave. If you don’t, we will remove you”. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the initiative responds to a troubling rise in asylum claims from students whose visas have expired. “Some are claiming asylum even when things haven’t changed in their home country,” Cooper told the BBC, adding that such actions strain the UK’s asylum system and accommodation resources.
